Kangaroo Island is a place like no other; dramatic wilderness, pristine beaches and untouched native bushland merge seamlessly with an abundance of gourmet delights and epicurean experiences. As soon as you set foot on the Island, you are on Island time – slow down, relax and delight in the warm hospitality.
Our Favourite Beaches
Stokes Bay | North Coast | 5Km from Stowaway
Awarded Australia’s best beach in 2023, its also our local, beautiful safe rockpool for swimming and a magical walk through a rock tunnel to arrive. Don’t let the carpark fool you, the tunnel entrance is quite hidden, follow the well worn path.
Snellings Beach | North Coast | 21Km from Stowaway
Car access to the beach (4WD only) and excellent for beach fishing.
Emu Bay | North Coast | 29Km from Stowaway
A glorious, protected long white stretch of sand – easy car access and during summer a pop up cafe serves cocktails and snacks. Very safe swimming beach.
Penneshaw Beach | Dudley Peninsula| Where ferry comes in
Small and protected it is perfect for a day of laying on the beach watching the ferry come and go. Close to the Beach Kiosk you can enjoy a coffee, icecream or lunch in between dips.
Our Favourite Bushwalks
The Ravine de Cesoars Hike – 3hrs + 7.4K return
‘The Ravine’ is my favourite hike for two reasons, its long enough to feel like you have been on a bushwalk but short enough that you don’t need to be overly prepared. It also traverses some really interesting country, has spectacular views and ends up at a beautiful remote beach with a cave formation.
Located on the far western end of the Island it is a bit of a drive to get to but well worth the effort. We have taken our kids on this walk and it is walkable for most fitness levels.
Waterfall Creek Hike – 2hrs + 4.2 Km return
Or as the locals call it ‘Billy Goat Falls’. A quiet secluded walk following a track to Billy Goat Waterfall. The trail winds through the shady trees and gently descends into the valley to Waterfall Creek. Crossing the creek on stepping stones, the walk ends at a lookout with views of the waterfall. Although the waterfall is high, it only flows during winter or after rains.
The walk is in Western River Wilderness Protection Area and the trail begins at Gate 2, at a small carpark on Colmans Road, which is 9.3km off of the Playford Highway (the dirt road to Cape Borda.)
Lathami Conservation Park – 0.5 – 2hrs
One of the last refuges for the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo, Lathami is the perfect walk for those keen bird watchers and conservation enthusiasts. Entry to the park is 3km from the Stowaway entrance and a rough path guides you into the park, however it is a choose your own adventure down the bottom of the valley through the eucualpts (look for the installed nest boxes for the Glossies) and casurina trees (the glossies food source). Go as far as you choose, and walk back the same direction to exit.
