How to get to Kangaroo Island

Being a Kangaroo Island local I am used to the logistics of getting to and from the ‘big island’ but I totally understand the thought of coordinating the logistics of an ‘across the sea’ holiday can seem a little daunting! Never fear read on and I have solved all your problems…well the travel related ones anyway…

How long?

We all wish we could holiday for weeks at a time but the reality is in our hectic lives of jobs, kids and Netflix binging, short getaways are the most convenient and Kangaroo Island is perfect for this. I recommend at least 2 nights and three full days to really get the most from your Kangaroo Island experience (longer is always better!). If you do stay with us at Stowaway you will find like most of our guests that you just want to chill and enjoy the hot tub and sauna so make sure you allow for some down time in your itinerary to just ‘be’.

Fly or Drive?

How you arrive all depends on where you’re coming from, how long you have to spend getting here and your budget. The one thing you will need is a car, there is no public transport or taxis on KI and it is a big Island!

Driving your car onto the Sealink ferry at Cape Jervis (2hrs south of Adelaide) is a very popular option, it is the cheapest and you have the independence of your own vehicle (it also means you can bring fishing gear, surfboards, bikes etc). You do need to book the ferry in advance but there are lots of departures every day. It only takes 45mins and you arrive at the beautiful seaside town of Penneshaw.

There is a brand new passenger ferry service KI Connect which departs Cape Jervis and arrives at American River on KI. You will need to hire a car once you get to Kangaroo Island to get you around but KIC can hook you up with their own fleet of hire cars.

Short on time or coming from interstate? Then flying is your best option – even better we now have a gorgeous new airport being serviced by QANTAS, so you can check your luggage through from any major airport.  Car hire is available at the Kingscote airport (even eco friendly electric cars).

Really short on time or just want the ultimate luxury travel experience? Talk to us about chartering a helicopter transfer direct to your Stowaway and arrive like a rock star!

Wilderness or Food + Drink

The great thing about a Kangaroo Island getaway is that you don’t have to choose, you can have it all! Also, you don’t need hiking boots to feel like you are immersed in nature it’s all around you. You can sip KI Spirit cocktails at Table 88 Wine and Tapas bar whilst the kangaroos graze out the front and the sun sets over Stokes Bay or just watch the wildlife with a glass of bubbles in hand in your Stowaway hot tub! If you really want to get amongst it then there are fabulous bushwalks & beaches just down the road from your Stowaways.

So getaway to discover the things that really matter in life!

Luxury Escape: Make the most of winter on Kangaroo Island

As Kangaroo Island welcomes winter, the rugged landscape is invigorated by rains that transform golden fields into luscious greenswards. It’s a time for experiencing the wild and pristine South Australian environment while creating a warm sense of sanctuary.

Stowaway lodges are nested amongst authentically Australian scenery, with 180° degree views, and elegant contemporary interiors warmed by a double sided wood fire.

Perfect for couples retreats, honeymoons, or luxury getaways, as a relaxing base for exploration, or sanctum for guiltless hibernation––there are so many ways to make your time during winter on Kangaroo Island unforgettable, rain or shine at Stowaway.

Bunker down

Our first lodge, ‘The Nest’, sits on a rise offering panoramic views of the Lathami Conservation Park, its rolling hills are covered in dense native bushland. ‘The Sleepy Hollow’ boasts expansive ocean views of the Investigator Straight and solitude as far as the eye can see. We know it will be hard to resist curling up in the window seat, with a blanket and a cuppa upon arrival, to simply watch and observe as the weather rolls through, the sun sets and rises, wildlife emerges, and stars light up the sky. Falling asleep to the sound of rain on the roof and waking to the birdcalls and sounds of Kangaroo Island fauna, will set the tone for your stay.

Absorb the surrounding nature

If the outdoors call to you, rug up in your winter woollies and explore the surrounding bushland––just be sure to carry water and make someone aware if you intend to walk off the beaten track. See if you can see the gorgeous Glossy Black Cockatoo, an endangered bird exclusive to the Island! For hiking trails, some of South Australia’s most iconic are just an hour away, making for the perfect adventurous day trip. The Snake Lagoon trail is moderately challenging but ultimately rewarding, with impeccable views leading to raw, uninhabited coast. In the winter months, fur seals come out to find sunshine on the rocks, baby joeys emerge from their mother’s pouches and Southern Right Whales breach just off of the shoreline.

Indulgent experiences

The milk and honey of vacation are what we dream of when times are tough; a professional massage in your candlelit abode, a bubble bath with panoramic views, or a hot tub under the stars. Your time with Stowaway can include all of this, allowing for a deep tranquillity that will follow you home. As the wind blows cold from the Southern Ocean, finish your day beside a crackling fireplace, wrapped up in fluffy white robes. Indulge in a steamy sauna or late-night hot chocolates on the porch before collapsing onto a cloud-like bed. Bring your face masks and favourite magazine or book the ultimate indulgence and unwind and revitalise with a relaxing massage for one or two in the privacy of your luxurious spa-like bathroom and prepare to be pampered in total privacy.

Epicurean eats

All of our guests receive a complimentary bottle of local sparkling wine and nibbles on arrival, freshly baked bread and a selection of Eden on KI fudge to begin their momentous epicurean journey.

Kangaroo Island is home to so much exquisite quality produce, particularly famous for its marron, lamb, artisanal cheese and interesting varieties of honey. These local delicacies are a must-try for all foodies that visit KI, but we understand that food shopping may not be on your holiday to-do list. That’s why, on top of our fully equipped cook’s kitchen, we provide food and drink packages offering everything you need. Choose from a wide selection of mouth-watering meals that showcase the region’s finest; from Southern Rock Lobster to Grazing Plates, Big Breakfasts and Gourmet BBQs. If that’s not enough to inspire some creativity in the kitchen, we also offer in-house cooking experiences with renowned chef, John Deer. If you have a knack for fishing and want to catch something fresh for dinner, the Stokes Bay rocks (west of the shacks) often send relaxed fishermen home with salmon, whiting, tommies, squid and the occasional flathead or snapper.

A reason to cheers

No romantic getaway or masterful meal would be complete without a glass of wine or a well-garnished gin, so we make it possible to bring gin tasting experiences from Kangaroo Island Spirits to you. We can also arrange an indulgent selection of wines from local wine producer, Dudley Wines. In accordance with some of life’s greatest pleasures, we hope that the lodge is filled with inviting aromas and that your taste buds are singing by the end of your stay with Stowaway.

Reconnecting with what matters

Sometimes it’s hard to prioritize the things we truly live for, especially when we’re distracted by work, life, and other labours of love. A stay at Stowaway is about reconnecting with yourself and the people that make you the happiest. Designed for two, it’s a place to rekindle romance and foster a new one. It’s also a time to reconnect with your passions; a time for your inner-artist, whose talents have long been quelled, to finally paint that landscape. A time for your inner-bookworm to read through a pile of fiction beside a crackling fire, only looking up to admire breathtaking territory. It’s a time for your inner-photographer, monk, yogi, or couch potato to rediscover their practice in solitude. It’s amazing what an idyllic environment, and a little bit of time, can do for the soul.

Daytrips

Should you manage to tear yourself from the comforts of your Stowaway lodge, Kangaroo Island and the surrounding Stokes Bay areas are brimming with exciting attractions. Just a 1km drive from the lodges you’ll find Table 88, a Mediterranean inspired Tapas Bar and Restaurant, dishing out premium food and drinks from 11 am to 10 pm. A visit to the Islander Estate Vineyards and their tasting room on the Cygnet River will fascinate you with their winemaking techniques and the significance that Kangaroo Island’s maritime position has on the vine grapes. If you’ve finished your Stowaway supply of Dudley Wines, you won’t regret checking out their cellar door too––in 2017 they won best Cellar Door Tourism Experience. In just an hour-and-a-half you can reach KI’s iconic Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, leaving a whole day to take photos, explore, and discover the Island’s history. Alternatively, if you prefer the dunes, a 40-minute drive will have you sliding down the sandy ridges of the Little Sahara in hysterics, without the crowds of peak season.

Discover The Best Luxury Experiences On Kangaroo Island

Owner of Stowaway Kangaroo Island luxury accommodation lodges Carly Bussenchutt, knows a thing (or three) about Kangaroo Island. Having a long family history and lifelong love affair with this South Australian jewel, Carly loves to share her top tips for an indulgent island getaway. From secluded beaches to wildlife-filled walks and long, locally produced lunches – Carly is your secret weapon when it comes to planning the ultimate Kangaroo Island holiday.

Life’s A Beach

While South Australia is rather spoiled with beautiful beaches, Carly knows which one deserves the gold medal.

“Hands down Stokes Bay. Just down the road from the Stowaway lodges, walk through a secret cave to one of the island’s most secluded beaches. Hit the surf or just laze in the natural rock pool. There is nowhere else like it and it is only enhanced by the brilliant little café which serves the best salt and pepper squid I have ever tasted.”

A Big Day Out

What’s an island for if not adventuring? Make your first foray a special occasion and head out on a food and wine tasting extravaganza.

“Without fail, if we are looking for a special day out we do a drive to the Dudley Peninsula (via the one of a kind KI Spirits for a handcrafted gin, of course), home of the spectacular Dudley Wines cellar door. Their friendly staff, great wine, and fabulous local food always make for a wonderful day out,” Carly says “…and don’t forget to call past American River on the way home to pick up a dozen fresh oysters for dinner!”

Walk With Nature

Kangaroo Island is renowned for its abundant wildlife, and the isolation of the island means they are a little less frightened of people than mainland critters. To get up close to some endangered species, all you have to do is take one of the islands many walking tracks.

“My favourite walk has to be down into the Lathami Conservation Park, mainly because it is home to the Glossy Black Cockatoo. I still get goosebumps when I see these endangered birds flying across the ravine. If you keep your eyes peeled you might even find yourself the

ultimate souvenir, a Glossy Black tail feather!”.

Scenic Picnic

Pack yourself a bag full of locally made and sourced treats and set off for a picnic. While you are spoilt for picturesque locations, Carly has some insider trading.

“I love Western River Cove, a scenic drive along the coast from the Stowaway lodges. The beach is nearly always empty and there is a great picnic area overlooking the river.” Carly says. A little-known tip? Once your picnic lunch has settled, strip off for a dive in the waves. “The beach is also great for a dip, it’s a bit of a locals secret.”

Long Lunch

Walked yourself sore the day before? After an adventure of discovery, sometimes the best recovery is one where you can indulge your palate. Luckily Kangaroo Island has some truly gorgeous epicurean delights waiting to be tasted. Do it justice and give yourself a long lunch experience, with Carly on hand to point you in the direction of a few of her favourites.

“The Enchanted Fig Tree at Snellings Beach is my number one foodie destination,” Carly says. “Amazing local produce presented in a nine-course degustation menu all while sitting in an actual fig tree – I am not kidding! It is a truly amazing experience and is super romantic as you will likely be tucked away in your own little branched off nook. Wonderful.”

Night Out

Kangaroo Island operates on its own version of ‘island time’. The pace is slower, people don’t hurry and shops and businesses close early. However, fret not, if you fancy a night out on the town, you definitely have options, Carly assures.

“As luck would have it, Table 88, a fabulous wine and tapas bar is only just down the road from the Stowaway lodges. It is the perfect place for a relaxed evening out, taking in the gorgeous view over Stokes Bay and enjoying some unique KI food and drink. Apart from your hot tub, there is no better way to enjoy a KI sunset.”

Obviously, there is so much more on offer on the Island. We’re always on hand to help you with enquiries or to give you insider knowledge. Whether it comes to food and drink, the best walks, secret local beaches or even helping when it comes to opening hours – your stay at Stowaway Kangaroo Island has all bases covered. Kangaroo Island really is the perfect South Australian location for a couples break. The wild and rugged landscape lends itself to an escapism that seems otherworldly and allows you to set aside distractions and truly connect with your partner – and nature. Still need convincing? Here are five reasons why Stowaway Kangaroo Island is an idyllic couples retreat.

Privacy

Stowaway is 100% secluded. No one can see you. Your privacy is our priority – unlike a hotel where you have to share the spa and sauna with strangers. Your amenities are yours and yours alone. Fancy a massage? No need to walk through the lobby after your massage – our masseuse comes to you. Meaning you can truly relax, without sharing your experience with strangers – indulgence at its finest.

Gorgeous amenities

Stowaway Kangaroo Island is all about luxury – made on a scale for two. This is echoed throughout the make and design of the lodges, and the products and amenities inside them. From discrete underfloor heating that keeps you warm in the cooler months, to a fireplace in the bedroom – everything is made with enhanced enjoyment in mind. Comfort and style is a mark of true luxury, and you and your partner can ease into the alfresco in-deck hot tub, after a day exploring the island. If you’re in need of further relaxation, the glass sauna offers a sultry nook to unwind. Finally, retire to your bedroom for a soak in the freestanding tub, and then recline on the enormous comfy bed, with the double-sided wood burning fireplace setting the mood lighting.

Great food and drink experiences

There is nothing that spoils a romantic getaway like a trip to the supermarket. Haggling over dinner demands and trying to set a menu can really spoil a relaxed mood. However, if you are anything like Adam and I, when travelling we like to try as much local food and drink as we can – which is not always easy to source. Stowaway Kangaroo Island has sorted that little problem for you, with our pre-ordered packages. We’ve sourced and supplied delicious and authentic food and drink hampers made up of the best local produce Kangaroo Island has to offer. Think island crayfish, local lamb and artisan cheeses (for a start). With award-winning gins and unique wines waiting for you to enjoy upon arrival, our wish is to have you relaxed and indulged as soon as possible. Arrive, pour a glass and have a nibble and unwind – it’s that easy. If you want to up the ante, then book an ultimate in-house cooking experience with our renowned local chef. Fine dining has never felt so easy or so intimate.

Remote but accessible

There is something incredibly special about going to an island. As soon as you leave the mainland behind, you get the feeling you are escaping your real life and embarking on an adventure. It’s the perfect antidote to the stressful tedium of day-to-day reality. As an added bonus, joint adventures bring you closer together as a couple. Remoteness equals fewer people, which is perfect for a romantic getaway as you are bringing the company.

With the new QANTAS route flying directly to Kangaroo Island from both Melbourne and Adelaide, it has never been easier to visit Kangaroo Island for a short staycation. With the Sealink ferry service departing Cape Jervis daily, couples are spoilt for choice on how to escape to the island.

Nature

Get back to nature. It sounds so simple, right? In our highly urbanised daily existence, nature can feel like a utopian world which seems next to impossible to access. At least not without a sturdy pair of hiking boots, a tent, and an uncomfortable air mattress. Not so at Stowaway Kangaroo Island. You can leave the tent at home and indulge in luxury accommodation, without forgoing an eco-friendly, up-close-with nature experience – the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Your evenings will be surrounded by local wildlife and you won’t even have to get out of your hot tub to enjoy it – they come to you in this part of the world.

If these five reasons to book a romantic couples escape to Kangaroo Island haven’t convinced you, then take a look at some of the wonderful and unique food and dining experiences you can have on the island. You really are spoilt with what’s on offer on our gorgeous South Australian island escape – just a hop, skip, or a short flight away from Adelaide city. Spoil and indulge your loved one, and give them the wildly adventurous and indulgent luxury getaway they deserve. We can’t wait to show you.

Five Must-Try Kangaroo Island Delicacies

More than just fantastic landscapes and rugged beauty, South Australia’s Kangaroo Island offers a wealth of tastes and experiences that are unique to the island. From rare honey to prize-winning spirits – celebrate the bounty of nature’s harvest with these Kangaroo Island delicacies.

Ligurian Honey

Kangaroo Island is famous for its honey, and little wonder, the island is one of the oldest bee sanctuaries in the world. What makes the honey so special? It’s produced by the last living strain of Ligurian bees and the distinctive flavour of the honey is thanks to the bees foraging in native trees, with each tree giving a unique taste. Originating in Italy, they may be a long way from Europe but these bees have long called KI home – reportedly first introduced in 1881. The Islanders were so determined to keep the purity of the bees intact that it was declared a bee sanctuary in 1885 – and has remained so for well over one hundred years. The delicious honey is infused with the taste of the island and is perfect to enjoy during your stay or to take home as a gift.

Island Pure Haloumi

Have you ever tasted cheese from a sheep? You won’t be able to resist when visiting KI with its bountiful sheep population – sheep dairy is a huge and delicious industry. Higher in protein than ordinary cow’s milk, sheep milk is a wonderfully tasty alternative to traditional dairy. The sheep milk haloumi cheese from Island Pure is an iconic Kangaroo Island experience – lightly fried, the salty squeaky deliciousness is a perfect entrée on its own or fabulous with a fresh salad. Just add a crack of pepper and squeeze of citrus and make sure to enjoy with a KI drop.

Marron

These freshwater crayfish are a Kangaroo Island delicacy and live wild in the local river systems. A Western Australian native, they were introduced to KI in the 1960s as a farmable product. They’re often confused with the native South Australia yabby, though marrons grow a little bigger and are professionally farmed on the island. Not the easiest item to prepare but book an in-house cooking experience and Josh your professional chef will show you the ropes.

King George Whiting

I spent my childhood fishing off Stokes Bay for these beauties and it’s a bit of a rite of passage for many South Australian children. King George whiting have a mild, sweet flavour and are best enjoyed (I think) lightly floured and gently cooked in the pan. We can supply pre-prepared fillets (and cooking instructions) so you can find out what the big deal is.

Kangaroo Island Spirits Gin

While technically not a food, this it is the perfect drink to accompany, well, anything really! Voted as Australia’s best gin in 2016 and 2017, KIS (KI Spirits) is a firm local favourite. Visit the gorgeously rustic cellar door for a tasting and a cocktail or purchase our Cocktail Hour hamper and find out what all the hype is about – you won’t be disappointed.

To taste all these must-try KI delicacies, get in touch with me here or on +61 457 742 162  for more information about your luxury Kangaroo Island holiday – we can’t wait to share our island with you.
